Injuries in sports are no laughing matter. Normally. But sometimes athletes do something on or off the field that is so outlandish and unbelievable that you can't help but laugh.
1. Sammy Sosa
Sosa is one of the best home run hitters of all time, and home run hitters have bad backs, so it's not really a huge shock that Sammy missed some action on game days due to back issues. It wasn't until May 2004 that the former Cubs slugger sprained his ligament and was placed on the disabled list. Sosa, 35, sneezed not once but twice. You see, it's the second sneeze that makes all the difference, and that's why Sammy is listed in the 10th slot.
2. Ken Griffey Jr.
While Junior seems to have racked up more injuries than home runs in his career, one in particular stands out. According to baseball lore, Griffey once missed a game after slipping his protective cup, pinching one of his testicles and temporarily immobilizing him in more ways than one. Hey, I know this is supposed to be a funny list, but I'm sure the other guys out there will agree with me, there's nothing funny about damaging your branches and berries. Junior, my man, I feel for you.
3. Paulo Diogo
While playing for Geneva-based Swiss football club Servette FC, Diogo assisted on a goal late in the game. At the holiday party, he climbed the fence separating the field from the spectators. But unbeknownst to him, his wedding ring got caught in the fence and when Diogo jumped over the fence, most of his finger was torn off. To add insult to injury, Diogo was booked for excessive marking as he lay writhing in pain and the match officials frantically searched for the rest of the lost figure. Unfortunately, doctors were unable to reattach it and were later forced to amputate the rest of the finger.
4. Kevin Johnson
Sometimes your teammates can be your worst enemy. There have been many examples of this over the years, including the post-touchdown celebration that once knocked Ohio State WR/KR Ted Ginn Jr. out of the national championship game. Former Phoenix Suns guard Kevin Johnson suffered an injury similar to Jin's. After one game-winning touchdown, he was given a bear hug by teammate Charles Barkley. Apparently, Barkley got a little TOO excited at the basket and dislocated K.J.'s shoulder. Let this be a lesson to the future professional athletes of the world. Sometimes a simple high five is enough.
5. Kevin Mitchell
Mitchell played for nine different baseball teams during his career. He was a two-time All-Star, was named the National League MVP in 1989, and would later become the highest-paid player in Japanese baseball history. Mitchell also holds another distinct honor. He is the only athlete on this list to be honored for not one, but two head injuries. On one occasion, he reportedly strained an abdominal muscle while throwing up, which resulted in him going on the DL. But more famously, a frozen donut broke a tooth after being microwaved for too long, making it very difficult to bite. The latter incident kept Mitchell out of spring training for several days, resulting in the need for a root canal. Given Mitchell's weight issues towards the end of his career, it's actually surprising he didn't cut more teeth, if you know what I mean.
